2024/2025 SIGMA ADMISSION INTERVIEW The Purple Tie Beckons. Sigma Club, the University of Ibadan’s premier socio-philanthropic student organization, once again opens its gates to men who dare to be more than ordinary. The Sigma Admission Interview is upon us. This moment is not merely an academic or social milestone — it is a solemn invitation into a legacy. A legacy of purpose-driven service, intellectual distinction, and uncompromising virtue. The Purple Tie does not call to all — it calls to the few who dare to rise above the ordinary. An Enduring Legacy Since its founding in 1950, Sigma Club has stood as the vanguard of gentlemanly ideals and selfless service within the University of Ibadan and beyond. Its creed — For all that is pure — remains a living standard for every Sigmite who bears the mantle. Through decades of transformation, Sigma has remained unwavering in its mission: to mould principled men of substance, and to serve as a crucible for future leaders across generations. From Loyal Sigmites to Honorary Sigmites — the history of Sigma Club is inscribed in the lives of men who shaped nations, institutions, and communities. These are men whose lives exemplify the Club’s values of character, class, and courage. The Admission Interview: More Than a Process The Sigma Admission Interview is not a mere selection procedure. It is a rite of passage into a timeless brotherhood — one defined not by titles, wealth, or fleeting status, but by an enduring commitment to honour, excellence, and service. It is a deliberate, discerning process designed to identify those who reflect the Club’s ideals — men of thought, men of principle, and men of quiet strength. Men who speak not only with words but with action. Men ready to contribute to something greater than themselves. Eligibility Criteria To preserve the integrity and continuity of Sigma Club, the following eligibility criteria apply: • Male undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan are eligible. • Penultimate and final year students are not eligible. The Club seeks young men with time to grow within its ranks — individuals who can be nurtured, challenged, and refined into future custodians of its heritage. An Invitation to Purpose This is not a call for popularity. It is not an appeal to vanity. This is an invitation to purpose. A challenge to stand apart from the crowd — not in pride, but in principle. To wear the Purple Tie is to carry the weight of a tradition that spans decades. It is to commit oneself to philanthropy, leadership, intellectual growth, and above all, purity of intent. If you feel the stir of something noble within — if you sense the call to rise with integrity and serve with honour — then the moment is now. Anticipate the Sigma Admission Interview. Dare to rise. Dare to wear the Purple Tie. For All That Is Pure.

On July 3, 2025, the University of Ibadan’s Alumni Multipurpose Hall buzzed with energy and ideas as the Sigma Club hosted its 11th Public Lecture. This August event, a cornerstone of the club’s legacy, brought together students, alumni, and distinguished guests to discuss solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges. Held in honor of Old Chief Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, former CEO of First Bank Nigeria, the lecture hosted Dr. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, as the guest speaker. The theme, “Leveraging Technology and Digital Education for Mass Employment, Wealth Creation, and Poverty Alleviation,” struck a chord with everyone present, sparking conversations about Nigeria’s future. With dignitaries like the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, University of Ibadan Deputy Vice Chancellor Admin, Prof. Peter Olapegba, Chancellor of Lead City University, Honorary Sigmite (Prof) Gabriel Ogunmola, Managing Director of Space in Africa, Dr Temidayo Oniosun, Old Sigmite Dr. Gani Adeniran, and numerous Old Sigmites and Old Chiefs in attendance, the event was a powerful blend of inspiration and action. A Celebration of Legacy and Impact The 11th Sigma Club Public Lecture was a tribute to Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, a proud Old Chief whose contributions to Nigeria’s financial sector have left an indelible mark. As the former CEO of First Bank Nigeria, Dr. Adeduntan’s leadership exemplified the Sigma Club’s values of excellence, integrity, and service. In his remarks, he emphasized the urgency of using technology to lift Nigerians out of poverty, stating, “The opportunity to contribute to national discussions and make a meaningful impact cannot be ignored.” His words set the tone for the day, reminding attendees of the club’s mission to build men of character who drive positive change. The presence of Old Sigmites and Old Chiefs added a nostalgic yet forward-looking energy, connecting the club’s rich history with its vision for the future. Technology as a Tool for Transformation Dr. Karl Toriola, the guest speaker and CEO of MTN Nigeria, delivered a compelling address that highlighted the transformative power of technology and digital education. He stressed the need to overhaul Nigeria’s academic curriculum to align with the demands of the digital economy. “The curriculum we run in our educational system is not fully aligned with the digital economy,” Dr. Toriola noted, urging a focus on digital literacy from primary school onward. He pointed out opportunities in content creation, manufacturing, and agriculture, emphasizing that digital tools can unlock entrepreneurship and remote work, especially in underserved areas. Despite challenges like infrastructure deficits and inconsistent policies, Dr. Toriola’s message was clear: with the right skills and environment, Nigerian youths can thrive in today’s job market. Voices of Wisdom and a Call to Action The event was elevated by the presence of distinguished guests, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, who urged Nigerian youths to embrace continuous learning and innovation. “Your generation can shape the future of Nigeria. Never stop learning, innovating, and leveraging the power of ideas,” he said. Professor Gabriel Ogunmola, Chancellor of Lead City University and grand patron of the day, praised Dr. Adeduntan’s contributions, noting that the recognition reflects “who we are and what we can be.” The Sigma Chief, Toyinbo Ayodeji, underscored the club’s commitment to empowering youths through technological skills, reinforcing the lecture’s goal of fostering economic productivity. The event, attended by figures like the Managing Director of Space in Africa and Dr. Gani Adeniran, was a testament to Sigma Club’s influence in uniting leaders for meaningful dialogue. The 11th Sigma Public Lecture was more than an event—it was a call to action for Nigerian youths to harness technology and education for a brighter future. Honoring Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, the lecture brought together voices of experience and ambition, from Dr. Karl Toriola’s insights to the Alaafin’s encouragement. Sigma Club remains committed to fostering leadership and innovation, and this event was a shining example of that mission.

As part of the activities of the Club for this Sigma year, we organized the SIGMA HEALTH OUTREACH.The health outreach was aimed at promoting good health practices among the student body. It provided an opportunity for students to get free medical checkups, health screenings, scaling and polishing and access to health education resources. Our objectives for the Health Outreach event were clear. We aimed to offer scaling and polishing services to enhance oral hygiene provide free HIV and syphilis screening to promote sexual health awareness; conduct mental health assistance and conduct vital signs checks to identify potential health concerns and offer guidance. We worked alongside Unibadan Association of Dental Students. Their expertise in oral healthcare was instrumental in offering scaling and polishing services to our participants. They also offered trainings on healthy oral health hygiene. Another of our esteemed partners was ASIDO, an organization specializing in mental health support. Recognizing the importance of mental well-being, we aimed to provide holistic care to our participants, addressing both their physical and emotional needs. Additionally, we partnered with iCARE, an organization focused on HIV screening and education. Their invaluable support enabled us to provide free and confidential HIV screening to all participants. The impact of the Health Outreach event cannot be understated. Over 300 students within the university community, benefited from the free services provided. The positive feedback and engagement we received from the community served as a testament to the importance of such initiatives in addressing the health needs of our student population. We are inspired by the impact we have made and the lives we have touched through this Health Outreach. Moving forward, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to giving back to the community.
